Sleepin'

It's the finally day of the month and that now means for 31 days I have been waking up at 6 am.

Every.

Damn.

Day.

It is now 7:30 and I have finished a workout at the gym and I am ready to start my day.

I feel good.

Actually better yet I feel amazing.

Who would have known swapping over to an early wake up would have you feeling all types of good inside.

It's not like we get told this about a million times:

If you wake up earlier you'll feel better.

If you go to sleep earlier you'll feel better.

If you get 8hrs sleep you'll feel better.

We get it.

Sleep early. Wake up early.

You'll feel better.

It isn't that easy and trust me I know.

For someone who is notorious for a sleep in and even more notorious for an afternoon nap this was not a great thought process for me.

If I don't sleep in I'll be a horrible person at work.

If I don't have a nap at home how will I function tonight.

These were the thoughts that plagued me constantly. I lived by them, I functioned around them. It was getting to the point where I was actually organising my life around them.

Honestly it was my weakness.

Sleep was becoming like a drug to me and it was becoming very hard to wein myself off of it.

So this is where this blog now comes in.

On January 1st (not that I believe in resolutions, because I don't) I set myself a challenge. Could I for everyday in January wake up at 6am.

Could I do it?

Now being the final day of the month.

I can confirm.

I CAN DO IT

You can too.

I know you are probably sitting here reading and thinking to yourself

"No way, that's way too early".

"As if you have actually done that".

So let me stop you there and drop you with a few personal truth bombs that might make you change the way you think and help you reach your daily potential.

  • Waking up at 6am every day sets a daily routine for yourself. You start to want to wake up at the time and you will find falling asleep at night a lot easier when the routine starts to form.

  • Waking up at 6am every day allows for me personally to have a whole hour to myself before I have to start getting ready for work.

  • Waking up at 6am everyday ensures that I am ready for my day, ready for work and removes some of the chores that I would normally have to do when I got home from work.

  • Waking up at 6am every day is the only constant - I spend the hour doing all sorts of different things; journaling, scrolling Instagram, reading or some mornings it is filled with chores; washing, cleaning, making my lunch.

  • Waking up at 6 am every day hasn't changed for the last month and will continue ahead into the next month.

  • Waking up at 6am everyday has become so enjoyable for myself to have that whole hour just to my thoughts that I have started to wake up even earlier on the mornings where I am going for a walk or exercising just to ensure I still have that moment to myself before my day starts.

With all of theses positives and taking a moment to reflect back on my month I really wouldn't change it one moment. I have enjoyed my hour to myself and I will continue to enjoy it hopefully for the rest of the year.

But like all good things there does come a moment that just makes you want to roll over and go back to sleep. I will not lie to you some mornings are a lot harder than others.

  • Mornings where I have spent the night before in such a moment of fun with my friends that 6am rolls around so quickly.

  • Mornings where the alarm goes off and my boy wraps his arms around me and it is literally like fighting through cement to keep myself awake for the next 60 mins instead of curling up inside those arms and closing my eyes.

  • And then mornings when I haven't got a jam packed day and the old me starts to skip back and go what an amazing morning for a sleep in. Imagining how amazing that would be.

I am not going to lie to you I miss my sleep ins that's for sure but what I crave even more after a month of doing this is the calm of my own thoughts in the early hour that I have to myself.

If that isn't enough to support yourself even waking up half an hour before you are meant to get up then you might want to head back to all the health magazines and be reminded of all the health benefits that waking up early as.
