Welcome back to a new little direction that I am taking this blog, I hope that there are some who are interested in what is going on with my Uni, but I am really coming to you all with some advice.
So a little back story, I am currently enrolled in my second degree which is a double degree: Bachelor of Education/ Bachelor of Arts. I completed my first degree in 2015 which was a Bachelor of Business in Convention and Event Management.
I have had ups and down, I have had failed classes, withdrawn classes, internships, high distinctions, forgotten assignments and more what the fuck moments then you could have possibly imagined.
So yes I think I am more then qualified to write about University.
I really wanted to come and bring my own advice to what can be a very stressful time in any person life no matter of age, experience or place in life that they live.
So to the main point of this post, how can you combat first week jitters.
GET ORGANISED I know this may seem pretty self explanatory so I really wanted to break it down into the main points of organisation that you should be all over before you head into your first week in University. So here we go.
KNOW YOUR UNITS
if this is your first degree then good on you but the number one important thing make sure you are well aware of what units you enrolled in. I know you are probably sitting here and rolling your eyes at me like who doesn't know there units but there are plenty of us all that dont know are units or exactly what we are walking into before we get to class. So that leads me to my third one.
FAMILIARISE YOURSELF WITH THE BLACKBOARD
So I am not sure that every Uni calls it the Blackboard but that is what my Uni calls it. Pretty much it is just a website that has all your unit information, guides, assignments information and where to submit assignments too. It is the main university website that contains all the information that you could ever possibly need. It will also have all your messages and notifications from the Uni and your professors. So that leads to my fourth one.
READ THE NOTIFICATIONS
Be aware of all the notifications that are relevant to your class, this is where you can find out if your class has been cancelled, or moved or even what material you will need to bring to class. You can also see here what you need to do not only before you first week and first class but also before all of your classes. So this then leads us into fifth one.
READ THE MATERIALS
Before you head into your first lesson I can highly recommended to investigate all of the materials that you are givens so that you are prepared for the lesson and you are not sitting there thinking to yourself for the entire hour (if not longer) what the actual fuck am I learning right now. It also helps if you are one of the anxiety ridden people when you are in unfamiliar situations that you are prepared so that at least you have an idea of what people and your lecture are talking about. However this has spiralled me and lead me into our sixth one.
HAVE YOUR BOOKS READY
Whether you are studying two units or four units it is always best to have your books ready, the text books that you need and any other materials before you head into your first lesson. It always looks best to the teacher if you are prepared and trust me you feel even better as well. This also applies to having a laptop, if you are going bookless and you want to type all your notes that is fine (not for me, but fine) then make sure you are ready for some fast typing and that your laptop is charged and ready to use. With that we enter into our seventh and final tip!
SORT OUT YOUR ASSESSMENT DATES
Everyone who has ever come to me and talked to me about Uni or about starting Uni or has seeked any advice from me THIS IS THE NUMBER ONE THING I SAY! So is it ironic that I have written it last? NO. Because I have saved the best for last here.
Go through all your study guides and work out when all your assignments are. Write down there due dates. Put it somewhere obvious so that you can see it at all times. Set an alarm in your phone. Just make sure that you do not forget.
I hope that these few little tips will come in handy heading into your first week and I'll be back next with a few little tips on what else can come in handy with these coming weeks.
